This series in eight line-vessel  for the North Pacific was built 1948 - 1953. Seattle was the first one. Seattle, Golden Gate, Los Angeles, Lions Gate, California and Canada was built new at Kockums Shipyard. Silver Gate and Portland was built new at Howaltswerken in Kiel. The ship was delivered with two 7 cyl. two-stroke double-acting Kockum  MAN - dieselengines delivering 16.400 i.h.p. This made the ship to one of the worlds fastest line-vessel.
